From its first facility, a home for eight Jewish elders opening in 1908, Sholom has dedicated our services and programs to our cherished Jewish community. Although we have evolved throughout the years and serve older adults of all backgrounds and religions, we are proud to honor and observe our Jewish traditions and holidays.
On the evening of Monday, August 12th through the night of Tuesday, August 13th, you may notice a more quiet and somber community at both Sholom campuses, as we observe the Tisha B’Av holiday.
Tisha B’Av, the ninth day of the Hebrew month of Av marks the destruction of the 1st and 2nd Temples in Jerusalem as well as other tragic events in Jewish History. It is the saddest day of the Jewish year and it is a day of mourning.
There are communications that our Rabbi Shalom Reznik-Bell proactively shares with all team members, including Nutrition Services, Spiritual Care Services, Therapeutic Recreation, and Volunteer Services regarding activities that are permitted during the observance as well as restricted activities across the campus.
A Few Things to Note:
- There are no work restrictions for this holiday within any Sholom building, so you won’t see any staffing changes during this holiday.
- You will see a change in programming that’s offered on this holiday. No bingo or similar games will be played on this day in any Sholom Building. No special programs with food, music or entertainment will take place on this day in any Sholom building. Serious Jewish Movies may be shown and serious discussions may be conducted.
- There will be Tisha B’Av services on or within a day of this Holiday in the Ackerberg and Shaller Campuses and in Menorah Plaza.
- It is traditional to fast throughout Tisha B’Av to reflect the mournful mood of the Holiday. Only Jewish residents who choose to fast and that are medically able to fast should abstain from eating and drinking.
- A dairy dinner will be served on the evening before Tisha B’Av begins and a dairy lunch will be served on the day of Tisha B’Av in all Sholom Building.
Thank you for understanding our day of mourning, and being a member of our community. Sholom is proud to welcome residents, families, staff, partners, and guests of all backgrounds. We look forward to continuing to share our rich history with you and learning about your stories, culture, and traditions as well.
