Frequently Asked Questions About the Vitality & Aquatics Center

General Center Use, Fitness & Open Swim

The Vitality & Aquatics Center is designed for adults of varying ages and abilities who want to stay active, improve strength and mobility, exercise with less stress on their joints, or support recovery from an injury or health condition.

Aquatic Physical Therapy may be especially beneficial for individuals experiencing arthritis or joint pain, chronic pain or fatigue, back, neck or spine conditions, joint replacement or orthopedic rehabilitation, neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis, or stroke recovery.

No. A medical referral is not required to use the fitness center or warm-water pool during Open Swim hours.

We encourage participants to speak with their medical provider before beginning a new exercise program if they have health concerns or are unsure about activity restrictions or limitations.

The Aquatic Arthritis Class is a group fitness class led by a Physical Therapist Assistant. Participants complete appropriate cardiovascular activity while working on range of motion in major joints, strengthening and stretching major muscle groups, and challenging balance.

Participants should be able to safely participate in light cardiovascular activity.

Our warm-water therapy pool is maintained at approximately 92–94°F, creating a comfortable environment for aquatic exercise, mobility work and therapeutic activity.

For the health and safety of all participants, certain conditions may temporarily prevent pool use, including bowel or bladder incontinence, open wounds or skin rashes, certain external medical devices or ports—including catheters, PICC lines or external fixation devices—or difficulty safely maintaining or controlling blood pressure.

It’s helpful to know if you have range of motion restrictions or limitations with your range of motion and/or weightbearing, that might require limiting/adjusting what movements you can do in the pool.

Please contact our team if you’re unsure whether the pool is appropriate for you.

Our staff cannot provide personal assistance with bathing, dressing or changing before or after using the pool or fitness center.

Participants who need assistance with these activities should bring a family member, caregiver or other support person who can provide the necessary help.

No. The Vitality & Aquatics Center is designed for adults. Limiting use to adults helps us maintain a calm, comfortable and therapeutic environment.

Our 30-foot warm-water pool is primarily designed for therapeutic exercise, aquatic fitness and Open Swim rather than traditional lap swimming.

Lap swimming is generally not available because it can interfere with other participants’ use of the pool. On occasion, staff may permit lap swimming when pool usage is very low and doing so will not disrupt other participants.

Aquatic Physical Therapy Questions

A referral is required for Aquatic Physical Therapy. It is not required for Open Swim or independent use of the fitness center.

Ask your medical provider for a referral for “Aquatic Physical Therapy to evaluate and treat.”

The referral should identify the diagnosis or condition requiring treatment and include your demographic and insurance information so our team can verify coverage before scheduling your evaluation.

Referrals can be faxed to Sholom Rehabilitation at 651-328-2178.
