Sholom Spotlight: Tal and the Power of Connection

At Sholom, we believe that meaningful connection is at the heart of everything we do. It’s what brings purpose to each day, strengthens our community, and reminds us that every stage of life holds value.

This month, we are honored to spotlight Tal, a 25-year-old shaliach (representative) visiting through the St. Paul Jewish Federation. While Tal cannot share many personal details about where he lives due to the sensitive nature of his home region, what he brings to Sholom is something universal: connection, curiosity, and a deep appreciation for people.

Tal will spend two years with our community—and in that time, he is already making a lasting impact.

“They Are the Roots, and We Are the Flowers”

When asked about his experience with residents, Tal shared something that perfectly captures the spirit of Sholom:

“They have so much wisdom to share, and we need that. They are the roots, and the kids are the flowers. It’s important that we listen.”

Through conversations, storytelling, and time spent together, Tal has built meaningful relationships with residents across our campuses. Whether through structured programming or simple, heartfelt visits, he has found joy in being present.

“They love being together. And I love being with them,” he shared.

At Sholom, we often talk about belonging—and Tal brings that to life by helping create spaces where every voice is heard and every story matters.

Learning That Goes Both Ways

Tal’s experience hasn’t just impacted residents—it has shaped him, too.

“They give good advice,” he said. “They are truthful and don’t sugarcoat things.”

He describes residents as deeply human-centered—offering honesty, perspective, and lived wisdom that can’t be found anywhere else.

Through these interactions, Tal has developed an even greater appreciation for older adults and the importance of making sure they feel seen, valued, and heard.

Looking ahead, he hopes to continue building and growing programs that support seniors in meaningful ways—creating more opportunities for engagement, connection, and purpose.

A True Cultural Exchange

One of the most powerful aspects of Tal’s time at Sholom has been the exchange of culture, ideas, and perspectives.

Residents and Tal have engaged in thoughtful conversations about Israel, traditions, values, and life experiences—creating a space where dialogue is open, respectful, and enriching.

“It’s important to foster mutual understanding and respect—no matter your beliefs or background,” Tal shared.

Coming from a place he describes as a “melting pot of cultures,” Tal values diversity and the opportunity to learn from differences. What he enjoys most is how these conversations spark memories for residents—stories that might not have surfaced otherwise.

As he shares his experiences, residents reflect on their own, creating a powerful, shared sense of connection.

“Kehhila” – What Community Means

When asked what community means to him, Tal shared one simple, powerful word:

“Kehhila.”

“It’s connection. Bringing everyone together—friends, families, neighbors—all joining in a tight and warm space with smiles and genuine care for one another.”

That sense of kehhila is something we strive to create every day at Sholom—a place where people feel they belong, where relationships matter, and where care goes beyond services to truly seeing one another.

A Lasting Impact

Tal’s presence is a reminder that connection has no boundaries—whether across generations, cultures, or life experiences.

In just a short time, he has helped deepen relationships, spark meaningful conversations, and bring joy to those around him.

At Sholom, we are grateful for the opportunity to learn from Tal, just as he learns from our residents.

Because when we take the time to listen—to truly listen—we discover something powerful:

We belong to each other.
