Summer Activities for Seniors

Going outside in the fresh summer air is a wonderful way for aging loved ones and caregivers to spend their time together doing great outdoor activities. Going outside encourages light exercise and promotes socializing, which are both important parts for a healthy senior lifestyle. There are a handful ozzf great outdoor activities for senior citizens to do that are easy for caregivers to arrange.

Gardening

Gardening is one of the most popular outdoor activities for seniors. If you don’t have a garden or don’t have room to create a new one, many neighborhoods have community gardens. This is a great way for seniors to stay active and maintain strength and flexibility. This light aerobic activity is very beneficial and can be incorporated easily into a daily routine.

Walking

A great way to stay active is through walks. Whether it be long hikes or a quick jaunt around the neighborhood, walking helps to maintain cardio in a senior’s lifestyle. It’s also a great way to get some fresh air and see the sights the environment around you has to offer. If the senior is confined to a wheelchair, they can be pushed by a caretaker or loved one and still enjoy the fresh air outdoors.

Craft Shows, Farmer’s Markets, and Fairs

Summer is the season for farmer’s markets, craft fairs, flea markets and more. Walk around the booths, browse for deals, and go for lunch afterward. These are also great places to socialize.

Picnics

Picnics can be great for smaller or larger groups. Whether it be an extravagant and well-prepared meal or a simple sandwich with a healthy side, picnics serve as a great way to get out and soak up some Vitamin D. Fresh air and good conversation are great for both seniors and caregivers.

Bird Watching

While birdwatching can sometimes be seen as a less exciting activity, it can really be beneficial in calming the mind and allowing for reflection. This is a great activity for seniors who wish to enjoy and connect with nature. It’s very soothing and therapeutic. Plus, it can be done while hiking or from a more stationary location.

Water Fun

If you have access to an outdoor or indoor body of water, it’s a great time to splash around! Because of our body’s natural buoyancy, swimming is easier on the joints than many other forms of exercise, and can be relaxing (and quite refreshing) as well.

Fishing

This can just be a catch and release fishing activity. For those who always enjoyed the sport in earlier years, even if you don’t have access to a boat, you can cast a rod from a dock or along a riverbank or pond. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the day sitting in nature.
