Outpatient Rehabilitation for Seniors

Our outpatient rehabilitation services at Sholom include warm-water therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy services offered when the patient has not been admitted to the hospital. Outpatient rehabilitation for seniors will help with recovery from an injury, illness, or surgery, with treatment that can involve more than one type of therapy.

Our goal is to help you back to your daily life. We will discuss and develop the best therapy or a combination of treatments to help you heal. Here is some more information on what we do.

Warm-Water Physical Therapy

Our older patients appreciate warm-water therapy because it helps them exercise in ways that are not too uncomfortable, or not possible, on land. The buoyancy of the water takes the stress away from joints, making it easier for people to perform exercises correctly and safely. By aiding mobility and strength, warm-water physical therapy can speed up recovery.

For those suffering from joint inflammation, warm-water therapy can aid recovery significantly. It will also enhance circulation and improve body awareness. These factors can be key during the outpatient rehab process.

Our warm water therapy pool is in the David Feinberg Vitality & Aquatics Center, near Saint Paul’s Highland Park neighborhood. It has easy access via a ramp, and we can take care of our patients in group sessions or 1-on-1.

Senior Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy is similar to physical therapy. However, the main difference is that occupational therapy focuses on cognitive skills and fine motor skills, to help the injured or otherwise impaired person perform tasks they consider meaningful. Physical therapy, on the other hand, primarily focuses on gross motor function. Therefore, occupational therapy is more likely to include self-care routines such as dressing and washing oneself, and skills like writing or using simple tools that involve fine motor skills.

Our senior occupational therapists evaluate patients’ needs and determine their range of motion, strength, and balance. With these results, they can develop a course of treatment to assist recovery.

Senior occupational therapists provide:

  • Pain management via heat, electrical stimulation, and ultrasound.
  • Improvements to upper body function, motion coordination, and fine motor skills.
  • Techniques for self-care, home management, and returning to a community.
  • And much more.

We can advise you on how to exercise at home and assess potential hazards in your environment. This will not only help you recover, but also lower the risk of a repeat incident causing injury.

Physical Therapy for Seniors

Physical therapy is mainly concerned with restoring gross motor function. As with other types of treatment, a specialist will conduct a physical exam and evaluation to assess posture, joint motion, and flexibility, among other criteria. Following a diagnosis, specialists develop a physical therapy treatment plan to help a patient:

  • Rebuild strength
  • Enhance endurance
  • Retrain muscles
  • Train for balance
  • Improve gait and posture

As with our senior occupational therapists, our physical therapists can assess risks and develop a home exercise plan for ongoing improvement.

Speech Therapy

Our speech therapists begin by assessing speech disorders and communication problems to determine which techniques will be most effective in each case. Speech therapy can help those having difficulty finding words and expressing themselves following an injury, surgery, or another issue, as well as people who are no longer articulating correctly or have problems swallowing.

We help our patients that are having speech difficulties or issues with language comprehension for various reasons. Our team assists people following a stroke, and will work with them on reading and writing projects, as well as improving cognitive deficits, including improving memory, judgment, and problem-solving.
