If you are trying to find the right adult day care center, you want to make sure your parent will be happy and well-cared-for. Adult day care can be a great option but choosing the right one for your parent will give you peace of mind that your loved one is being cared for properly and you’ll feel less guilty when you leave them. The following are a few things to keep in mind when you are searching for the right adult day care for your parent.
Type of Care
When searching for the right adult day care for your parent this should your top priority! Some adult day care centers are strictly social, others specialize in caring for people with dementia and others may provide health care and rehab activities. More health-specialized adult day care centers may help keep a loved one living at home longer, rather than in a nursing home or assisted living facility.
Licensing
Some states have mandatory licenses and certification requirements for adult day care centers. However, all states issue basic guidelines for specific number of people allowed in a facility, types of care given, staff licensing and training, along with business permitting and licensing. Centers that deliver medical services will have stricter regulations. Visit the adult day care centers in your area to determine if they are a good match for your loved one’s needs and make sure to observe participants in their social activities, observe staff interactions, and talk with other families.
Location and Hours
How accessible is the facility? Will your parent be able to get there on their own, if necessary? Is transportation provided and if it is, is there an additional cost?
When considering locations, you should also take hours of operation into consideration as well. Since this will vary by center and could be a determining factor.
Cost
Besides looking at the overall cost of care (including activities, meals, etc.), be aware of payment options. Do they charge by the hour, day or week? Is their financial assistance available? Is there a minimum amount of service commitment?
