Sholom Home West Volunteer Bernice Cowl Gordon Honored
 |
Long time community volunteer Bernice Cowl Gordon was honored on Friday, December 21st at a special luncheon in her honor at Sholom Community Alliance. Bernice has been a regular volunteer at Sholom Home West – where she’s well known for her beautiful voice and storytelling – since it opened in 1991. Last month Bernice was one of 10 Minnesotans to receive the 2007 Virginia McKnight Binger Humanitarian Award. She was nominated for this prestigious honor by Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Minneapolis – where she is also an active volunteer. Sholom Community Alliance contacted St. Louis Park Mayor Jeff Jacobs about Bernice’s recent award and he immediately proclaimed December 21st, 2008 as Bernice Cowl Gordon Day in St. Louis Park. Bernice is also part of the Knollwood Place writing group and will soon be teaching at The Academy – the Center for Lifelong Learning now holding regular classes at Knollwood Place and the Roitenberg Residence. Bernice (seated) with Sholom Community Alliance CEO Bruce Kahn and Sholom Community Alliance President-Elect Wendy Baldinger.
The Academy at Sholom Community Alliance
A Center for Lifelong Learning is now open on the Ackerberg Campus thanks to the determination of Evelyn Shore, Knollwood Place tenant, who set out to share her never-ending thirst for learning. The Academy at Sholom Community Alliance – brings educational opportunities to tenants at Knollwood Place and in other Alliance buildings on the St. Louis Park campus. See the full list of classes offered in December.
A former secondary school teacher, Evie still teaches a class via the internet as an adjunct professor at Concordia College. Evie believes learning doesn't - and shouldn't - end with retirement. She cites research that can actually slow the aging process - and in some cases even help ward off memory loss. Evie founded the building’s successful writing group which now publishes four quarterly issues of the Voice – a literary magazine she edits.
The Academy offers regular lectures and guest speakers on a variety of subjects and topics. The Academy offers on-screen lectures by renowned professors from across the country on topics like world religions, Yiddish and the Supreme Court. Local experts in their respective fields facilitate the discussion following each lecture. Area artisans and professionals are also being tapped to share their talents and to teach classes at The Academy. Expertise isn’t the only criteria for teachers. All presenters must also be over the age of 62! For more information about The Academy, call 952.939.1627.
