Sholom Auxiliary

About the Auxiliary

Auxiliary members work tirelessly to provide the “extras” that make the Sholom Homes so exceptional. Special events and activities raise the dollars needed to enhance our residents’ well being.
Each month the Sholom Home Auxiliary contributes $13,000 to the operating budget of each Sholom Homes. It also supplies significant dollars for resident equipment, aesthetic items for the Homes, and special staffing needs.

Sholom Ball 2008 - A Centennial Celebration

The annual Sholom Ball celebrated "100 Years of Service" and drew a crowd of nearly 600 on Saturday, January 12, 2008. The gala was a night to remember and, thanks to the support of the community, helped the Auxiliary to raise funds to maintain its mission - to provide the extras that our seniors so richly deserve. Kudos to Sholom Auxiliary Vice-President Ball - Rollye Rinkey and her co-chairs, Mavis Goldstein, Nancy Getzkin and Marni Ribnick, pictured here.

Volunteer Opportunities
Auxiliary members help contribute to the Alliance through many hours of dedicated volunteering. Some ways in which Auxiliary members volunteer their time includes:

  • Planning and hosting the annual Sholom Ball
  • Making and selling “Delicious Knishes” for the State Fair, holidays and throughout the year
  • Providing beautiful Mothers’ Day teas at both nursing homes.
  • Sending “Mitzvah” cards acknowledging donations to the Auxiliary.
  • Helping run the Gift Shops
  • And many more!

To learn how you can volunteer, contact the Auxiliary office at 651.645.9877

Auxiliary Events

Members are committed to a wide range of annual fundraising projects that raise more than $300,000 a year for Sholom Home residents.

Membership Luncheons

Auxiliary members get a sneak-preview of the year’s newest fashions - from Dana Buchman to Ellen Tracy to St. John - at our annual Fall Meeting and Fashion Show. This exciting event also keeps members in-the-know about Auxiliary successes and the needs of the Sholom Homes. The Annual Spring Meeting and Installation welcomes the “Snowbirds” back to town and gives recognition and congratulations to hard-working Auxiliary board members past, present and future.

Silver "No Event Event” Tea

This “by mail only” fundraiser is an important yearly event sponsored by the children of Ruth Lipschultz and Sylvia Melamed in memory of their mothers. Monies raised are generously matched by the Jay and Rose Phillips Family Foundation.

Delicious Knishes Project

Each year in conjunction with the Minnesota State Fair, the Sholom Home Auxiliary sells their famous “Delicious Knishes” - mouthwatering seasoned potato puffs - made from a traditional recipe passed down from generation to generation. But note, these delightful morsels are packed and frozen by the dozen and can be purchased and picked up at either Sholom Home throughout the year. To place your order, call Sholom Home East (651-646-6311) or Sholom Home West (952-935-6311). Cost: $15/dozen (small) and $18/dozen (large). Download a holiday knish order form here!

Sholom Auxiliary's beloved "Knish Ladies" (actually 19 women and one man!) were named the 2006 Minnesota Health & Housing Alliance's (MHHA) Volunteers of the Year for District G, which encompasses the Twin Cities metro. The award honors individuals who go "above and beyond" to enhance and enrich the quality of life for seniors in their communities. The winners are: Lois Brand, Hazel Chase, Sophie Dudovitz, Lucille Garr, Barbara Gitlin, Rena Glaser, Debbie Goldberger, Roz Jaffee, Peggy Kane, Muriel Lachter, Joannie Levey, Mae Libman, Ann Miller, Josephine Portnoy, Toby Rosenblum, Ada Rubenstein, RuthAnn Schumeister, Yetta Simon, Debbie Sweet, Marilyn Warren and Mel Warren.

This dedicated group has made, baked and sold more than 100,000 knishes over the past 20 years, raising over $200,000 to buy much-needed equipment like wheelchairs and foodservice equipment to enhance the qualify of life for seniors in both Sholom nursing homes, and to supplement the fees tenants and residents pay in the beauty/barber shops in each facility.

A heartfelt thank you and congratulations to our wonderful Knish Ladies!
